Blades Get by Warriors 4-1

The Saskatoon Blades got the better of the division rival Moose Jaw Warriors with a 4-1 road victory on Saturday night at the Moose Jaw Civic Centre.

Brent Benson (Weyburn, SK), Stefan Elliott (North Vancouver, BC), Josh Nicholls (Tsawwassen, BC), and Walker Wintoneak (Flin Flon, MB) scored for the Blades, who now have points in 12 consecutive games.

A pair of 16-year-old rookies combined to put the Blades up 1-0 at the 12:29 mark of the first period. Duncan Siemens’ (Sherwood Park, AB) point shot was redirected by Benson for his 2nd of the season.

Elliott gave the Blades a two-goal lead six minutes into the second period. The third-year rearguard took a point shot that managed to find its way through a maze and past a screened Jeff Bosch into the Moose Jaw net.

The Blades went up 3-0 before the middle frame was over on a pretty passing play. Elliott started the play on the rush and dished off to Curtis Hamilton (Kelowna, BC). Hamilton then found Nicholls joining the rush late and the sophomore forward put home his 4th on the campaign.

The Warriors hit the scoreboard just 57 seconds into the third period. Rookie forward Antonin Honejsek capitalized on a Blades’ line change and deposited his 5th goal of the season.

Wintoneak added an empty netter with 21 seconds remaining in the hockey game for his 14th of the season to secure the victory.

Steven Stanford (Calgary, AB) got the call between the pipes for the Blades, making 26 saves for the victory. Bosch played the first 40 minutes of the contest in the Warriors’ net, stopping 17 of 20 shots sent his way and was credited with the loss. Rookie Brandon Glover entered the game prior to the third period and made 3 saves in relief.

Final score Saskatoon 4, Moose Jaw 1.

With the win the Blades see their season mark improve to 19-3-0-3 for 41 points and continue to remain first overall in the Western Hockey League. Besides earning points now in 12 straight games, the Blades have also won four consecutive games overall. The Warriors, meanwhile, fall to 15-9-1-0 for 31 points on the season.

The Blades get back on the ice next Friday, November 27th, when the Lethbridge Hurricanes come to Credit Union Centre. Game time is 7:05 pm. The game marks the unveiling of the brand-new score clock and power ribbons at Credit Union Centre. The second intermission features round 3 of the “Home Depot Race Around the World Contest”. The winning contestant from Friday’s game will move on to the next round and that much closer to a tremendous prize package for 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships. Tickets for Friday’s Blades-Hurricanes battle are available online at ticketmaster.ca, by calling 938-7800, or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet.
