THUNDERBIRDS TOP ROCKETS IN GAME SEVEN SHOWDOWN -- Riku Helenius made 31 saves and Lindsay Nielsen scored a shorthanded marker and added an assist to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Kelowna Rockets in Game 7 of their Kal Tire Western Conference quarter-final series on Tuesday, April 1st.

With the victory, the Thunderbirds win the best-of-seven series versus Kelowna four games to three and advance to the second round of the 2008 WHL playoffs.

HITMEN AND HURRICANES MOVING ON -- The Calgary Hitmen and the Lethbridge Hurricanes have both advanced to the second round of the 2008 WHL playoffs after winning their respective best-of-seven series' with victories on Sunday, March 30th.

The Hitmen won their MNP Eastern Conference quarter-final series versus the Moose Jaw Warriors four games to two, and will face the Swift Current Broncos in the second round of the playoffs.

Radek Meidl scored twice while T.J. Fast, Blair Macauley and Drew Hoff each netted a goal and an assist as the visiting Tri-City Americans defeated the Kamloops Blazers 6-2 in Game 4 of their Kal Tire Western Conference quarter-final series on Wednesday, March 26th.

With the victory, the Americans win the best-of-seven series four games to none, and advance to the second round of the 2008 WHL playoffs.

Tuesday's WHL Playoff Roundup

GIANTS 4, BRUINS 3

Craig Cunningham scored with just 47 seconds remaining in a third overtime period to lift the visiting Vancouver Giants to a 4-3 victory over the Chilliwack Bruins in Game 3 of their Kal tire Western Conference quarter-final series on Tuesday, March 25th.

Jonathon Blum – with a goal and an assist – James Wright and Michal Repik also scored for the Giants, who let a 3-1 lead slip away in the third period only to claim the victory in overtime, while Casey Pierro-Zabotel chipped in three assists. Tyson Sexsmith turned aside 49 of 52 shots he faced to record his 17th career playoff victory. The win gives the Giants a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

The 2008 WHL Bantam Draft lottery is set to take place on Wednesday morning, March 19th, at 11:00am local time.

A total of six teams will be involved: Portland Winter Hawks (6 balls), Red Deer Rebels (5 balls), Prince George Cougars [4 balls (SAS)], Edmonton Oil Kings (3 balls), Prince Albert Raiders (2 balls), and the Saskatoon Blades (1 ball).  The Blades will have 2 draft choices in the 1st round of this year’s WHL Bantam Draft as the team has their own pick, as well as Prince George’s pick as part of last year’s Devin Setoguchi trade.
